The question worth asking first
Where is the unit actually standing? Woodinville Wine Country counts more than 130 wineries and tasting rooms inside roughly a six-mile radius across four winemaking districts — other bodies publish 100-plus, and figures of 90 and 118 also circulate — and a town that dense in wine has a household storage habit to match. Most of the calls we take are decided by siting, not by the appliance.
That is the difference between here and the rest of the Eastside. Elsewhere a wine unit is an occasional find. On Hollywood Hill it is normal, in the townhouses and condos around downtown it is usually an undercounter unit doing real work, and out at Cottage Lake it is quite often a dedicated wine room in a detached garage, a basement or an outbuilding. Those last ones are the units that fail early, and they fail for a reason that has nothing to do with build quality.
What shortens an appliance life here specifically
Ambient temperature and dust, in that order, and both are a function of where the cabinet was put rather than what it is.
A wine unit has the tightest tolerance of any appliance in a domestic kitchen. A refrigerator that drifts two degrees is a refrigerator that drifts two degrees. A cellar that drifts two or three degrees for a season is a different bottle at the end of it, which is why owners here notice a fault at a magnitude that nobody would bother reporting on a beverage cabinet. That sensitivity is the whole reason this category generates service calls at all.
Now put that cabinet somewhere unconditioned. A garage on Hollywood Hill in August, a Cottage Lake outbuilding under a dark roof, a Wellington basement bar that is warm rather than cool — in every case the compressor is fighting a room that a kitchen installation would never subject it to. Run time goes up, the duty cycle stops resembling anything in the design assumptions, and the condenser fouls faster because a garage is a dustier place than a kitchen. The unit is not being abused, it is being asked to do a different job than the one it was sized for.
Downtown Woodinville produces the opposite version of the same problem. Undercounter units in the condos and townhouses along the NE 175th corridor are in conditioned space, but they are entertaining appliances in a district built around tasting: doors opened repeatedly on a Saturday, warm bottles loaded in batches, and a cabinet that never gets a quiet night to recover. Reading the machine you already own
Three faults account for most of what we see, and you can separate them from the doorway.
One zone wrong, the other right. If the upper zone is sitting at 62°F against a 55°F setting while the lower zone is exactly where it should be, the sealed system is working — one circuit is still making cold. That points at the damper or fan serving the failing zone, or at the sensor reporting it, and it is a good outcome as these things go.
Both zones drifting together, with the compressor audible through the cabinet at night. That is a capacity problem, and the first thing to rule out is the condenser and the room around it. Take a thermometer to the space the unit stands in on a warm afternoon before you conclude anything about the machine. A great many Cottage Lake and Hollywood Hill callers discover their cellar is not a cellar.

Check the gasket fold all the way round and check that the door pulls itself shut from an inch open rather than resting there.
A dark display with the interior light and fan still running is the exception to all of the above: power is present and the load side is alive, so that is a control or panel fault rather than anything refrigeration-related.
Repair, or start again
The honest split is that zone-level faults are worth repairing almost every time and sealed-system faults need a conversation.
Door gasket or seal replacement runs $280 to $630, which is the fix for the damp-label complaint and for a good share of the drift complaints too. An evaporator or condenser fan motor is $300 to $660, and that is the usual answer to one zone warm and one zone right. Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor work is $290 to $670. Electronic control board replacement is $450 to $1,000, which is where the dark-display fault lands.
Compressor or sealed-system repair is $1,490 to $3,400. On a unit that has spent five summers in an unconditioned garage, that figure is the moment to ask whether the next one should live somewhere else — because a replacement cabinet installed in the same hot room is a repeat of the same appointment in a few years. Moving the unit into conditioned space, or ventilating the space it is in, is often the cheaper half of the repair.
